Why are Choke chains considered necessary for big dogs2007-11-25 2:55:41

They are dangerous and shouldn't be left on a dog. Especially if the dog is crated or in a kennel. They can very easily become caught on things.

I have never used a choke chain on any of my dogs, even when we used to have Shepherd's and Labs. I have seen too many horror pictures of where the owners left the chains on the dogs neck and when they grew the chains dug into their necks.

There is no need to use choke collars. I think some people just like them for decoration. Nylon collars are just fine.

I have used choke type collars (mostly show nylon), but have used others. It depends on the individual dog. I have never heard of "having" to use choke collars on big dogs.

In fact haltis are much better, and easier to use on a pulling dog.

If your dog doesn't need either, so be it.

some people are misguided at best, but most often, uneducated... Choke chains are outdated, cruel, ineffective, and a negative training method.

i advocate using the halti/gentle leader. they work just like a bridle on a horse's head... steers the dog, allows them to breathe easily, and stops them from pulling/jumping.

my dog loves his halti. he heels automatically. pleasant walks for both of us.

Because some people are too lazy to train their dogs. Choke chains don't even really restrain a large dog. Any dog can be trained to heel in a civilized manner without using a choke chain to do it.

i use a nylon slip collar on all my dogs. my clip collars slip over their heads and i almost lost my beagle because of a clip collar. i was in the vets parking lot and she slipped out of it and nearly got hit by a car. i also use harnesses when out walking. choke collars are not cruel if you know how to use them properly.
