There is actually a very interesting history to how dalmations became the standard for fire house dogs!

Back in the olden days (18th-19th century), dalmations were noted in society for their specific bond and calming affects to work with horses.

Because of this bond, and because many of the first fire-houses available transported items via horse carriage, dalmations were used as guard dogs to these houses and the horses that provided people with firefighting care.

Eventually, cars became the norm - but the title stuck with the dogs and they became somewhat of a mascot for firefighters.

Now days they are just a symbol of days past. In the eary days they were used to run along side the fire wagon pulled by horses. There job was to protect the horses and to keep them steady while the firemen put out the fires. They did this by nipping at the horses feet.
