Must be the lions they used to chase in Africa. They are calculating and cunning!!

Once we put up a piece of yarn with bells on it to stop our basenji from getting into the christmas presents. It took one try before she worked out she could delicately step over the yarn without making it ring!

I wouldn't have been at all surprised if I walked out one day to find her with a world map on the ground and her plans for world domination sprawled out (in tiny little bits and pieces of course) next to an 8 foot tunnel she was digging as plan B of her escape route.

They need a lot of exercise and also ways to keep their minds busy.

They are not crazy with the right owner.

Take them Lure Coursing if you really want to have fun with them.

I've found that they're all different in many respects, but yes they all do have a "wild hair" of some sort. Like others have said, "A tired basenji is a happy basenji." If they don't get enough excersize they'll let you know in creative ways that they are bored.

Since they're still capable of being self sufficient in the right environment, they retain their independance, and a high prey drive.

Also, because they are both scent & sight hounds with with a superb sense of hearing a little stimuli can go a long way into getting their attention, and causing them to really really want to investigate further.

And, some, I swear, even have a sense of humor.
