Why are people saying that dogs need titles2007-11-25 2:55:43

I'm a competitive dog sport owner (AUS) - I was reading a few of the 'when should I breed my dog' threads and answered. BUT - I understand and support the need for a CH title to deem your dog as breeding quality - but why agility/obedience/etc. I don't see it as a necessity - your dog can be breeding quality without it. but I do understand people wanting it..

Yet some of you are saying it is necessary - why?

If any dog is going to be bred it should be bred to be able to perform the job it was created to do and temperament should be a big factor as well. Looks should not be the number one goal. Though I believe what people are saying is a conformation championship is necessary for breeding so the dog will have correct structure. I think a lot of things that are said is to try to get people to re-think their desire to breed.

EDIT: Yes I do know something about obedience and agility and you are right no titles need to be earned in those areas because I know too many dogs (of questionable quality and background) that are not breedable that excel in agility and obed and I believe this has more to do with the training or the trainer the dog has, not instinct or genetics so those titles do not prove a dog breedable. As I stated earlier, I think people will say anything to deter the unknowledgeable from breeding. I do not remember seeing anybody in YA answers saying the dog needs to be obed or agility titled but it is very possible. You have to understand there are all kind of people answering questions and they range from the very knowledgeable to the self proclaimed experts, so there is bound to be wrong/bad information passed along.
