Why are people saying that dogs need titles2007-11-25 2:55:43

One of my next requirements for a reputable breeder is that they have proven their dogs in the venue for which the dog was bred to do. If I am looking for a Golden Retriever, I want some hunting/tracking/retrieving titles. And yes, I would want some obedience titles on the dog to prove that he is of good-nature and attentive to his master.

If I am looking for a Jack Russell Terrier, I want to see some earth dog titles, as Terriers were bred to go to ground and be well, terriers!

And if I am looking for an Australian Shepherd, I for sure want to see some herding titles AND agility titles to prove the dog is fit, agile, and has the ability to HERD.

A common name I would want to see for a Golden is:

Ch. dog's name MH MXJ CD.

(conformation) hunting/agility/obedience. plus the health screenings as following:

OFA hips/elbows/thyroid/heart

and CERF eyes.

Oh, and a double-championed dog is ALWAYS a better breeding candidate to me!

I think that working and sport titles should be just as important as a conformation title. The breed was bred to do a job, not to run around a ring and look pretty. I do not think that I have ever seen a Poodle that could go out and do water retrieval like they were bred to. Also, in some cases the working and sport titles can show that the dog is healthier than conformation dogs and they usually have a more stable temperament. If the dog is not built correctly (like joints) it cannot go out and do a job for hours, but it may be able to look okay for 5 minutes.
