Another interest in breed quality has entered the dog sporting scene because of the increased interest in rally and agility. These two activities have brought a surge of interest in the sport of dogs--but with a slightly different eye on the dog beyond the breed standard. In my breed, the Papillon, for example, the standard allows for a size of 8 to 11 inches with with a fault at 11 1/2 and a disqualification for 12 inches. Papillons are incredibly agile and wonderful dogs for the agility ring, but people wishing to compete in agility always prefer the larger dogs within the standard simply because they can cover more ground in timed events and also are more likely to be more sturdy with more substance of bone--therefore less likely to suffer from injuries.

Papillons were never bred for athletic competition or for hunting in the first place, but now the interest in the breed is gathering admirers from a more athletic oriented crowd. Some agility people have even become breeders themselves in order to breed for larger dogs that still may conform to the standard but be larger and of more substance--or may even be oversized and therefore would be disqualified for the conformation ring.

So now we have dual interests in many breeds on titles being before and aft. Some, not most, like a title in front and behind the name because it shows the dog's quality under more than one venue.

Sorry I got lengthy, but hope this helps.

It shows a line is more than just pretty, they are breeding smart talented dogs, too. I didn't care about breeding at all, and adopted rescues. That's been great, but now I'm an agility addict. I'd like to get a future pup from a breeder who has shown that they have generations of dogs that excel at agility and obedience. If you want to herd, the dog needs to have herding instinct. So, you'd want to get a pup from a strong working line. The proof is in the titles. Also, having titles, as a breeder, seems to be a "sport" in itself. My friend wants to get her kennel in the Hall of Fame for her breed. It's my understanding she needs to have a certain amt. of dogs from her litters get titles in various events to show versatility in her line. Besides that, many people with purbreds compete for versatility awards, by participating in multiple events. Puppies who come from very titled lines are very sought after by people who compete. For wanting a nice pet, titles are certainly not necessary in any way.
