I got a Dyson so now I empty the canister ever time I finish vacuuming. Much better.
You can get fresheners little capsules that you can put in the hoover bag to get rid of any smell.
Your sister is wrong. The odor is not from rug freshener. That would be an immediate fix. Buy the one for pet odors (even though your pet doesn't smell) It will deodorize the bag and the carpeting. Also get Febreze and spray the bag. If its an upright with a bag that fills with air Febreze the bag. Then put Vacuum Beads in the bag to keep it fresh.
You might be vacuuming nasty things that stink.
