Why are we allowed to brand cattle but not dogs2007-11-25 2:55:44

Now I think some dogs are still being branded, I know they are still being tattooed.

I don't know. Good question. Maybe because people don't see cows and such as animals they see them as a way to make money and/or food. When dogs are seen as pets (in a lot of places in the world) I guess because you don't name cows? because people don't think that they have feelings? because they are defenseless against it? Because People are sick.

every society has animals that they have elevated above the food chain.

that doesn't mean they don't taste good, it just means that they have more meaning to a group of people than food.

For us, dogs are one of these animals. Why would we brand an animal we consider to be a pet, a friend, or a companion?

There are societies that eat dogs. There are societies that do not eat cows. To each their own.

Since dogs are pets and "members of the family", branding is seen as cruel. Cattle, on the other hand, are food so the rules are different. Some dogs do have their ears tattooed but that is as close to branding as we go with pets.

Well besides what others have written...

Cows have a really thick hide (Leather) that can take the heat of the branding, whereas dogs have skin like us.

I don't know but I think it is wrong to brand anything! How would you like it if you couldn't talk and have the choice to choose if you want a tatoo or be branded (something burnt into your skin!)

Why would we want to...? For most people a dog is a member of their family just like a child is. Would you brand yourself or your children? Probably not...

Cattle are considered farm animals and not domestic animals. The only rights farm animals have are specified throught the FDA while domestic animals are protected under state, county, and city laws. I don't believe it's right to brand any animal. Especially with the new microchiping process. It's more effective and non-abusive.
