Why crates, dogs are not in teh circus2007-11-25 2:55:46

why are all americans obsessed with crate training their dogs, no offence to the people that do and it may work but there are plenty of other ways to train dogs and personally i think crate training is cruel dogs are not meant to be kept in cages and this can often make a dog violent towards people it dont know , sorry if i have caused offence but i just want to know why and where crate training come from ???

I think this this is dire practice as well and dont care if I cause offence or not to be frank!

I can understadn keeping a dog in a crate to move it but not as a permenant thing whats the point of having a dog!

It is a good way to housebreak a dog.

Dogs are by nature denning animals and the crate offers a secure den, a haven if you will. It affords a safe place for your pet to hole up when it is not feeling well, if you have company over, or when you have to transport it.

It does give a means of containing a dog which may be destructive to furnishings, by urinating, chewing, etc. if allowed to run loose in the house all day. (I do not advocate leaving them kennelled for extended periods of time.)

My 3 dachshunds all have their own crates; they are housebroken so I usually just leave the crate doors open and they willingly go there during the day to rest, chew a toy, eat a treat, etc.

i dont think its cruel at all. sometimes dogs need a sense of security, in a big house and a tiny dog they dont know where their "home" or sleep area is. Confining them to a crate give them a sense of safety and secirity. whenever my pomerainian is scared (hes scared of loud noises) he'll run and hide in his crate and this makes him feel safer like her protected. Plus its good discipline. if the dog is being bad and getting into things, he knows its time to calm down when he goes to his crate, i dont see how u could thin its cruel. obviously if the dog is too big for the crate then that wqoul dbe considered cruel but i think its a good form of dicispline. i mean if u had kids would ulet them run around and go wacky? no! you would send them to their room just liek doggies have their own little "room".

It gives the dog his own home. Dogs prefer the low ceiling where they can feel more secure.
