Why did my 5 month old hound start howling at some people
i went to a yard sale today, and there were two little kids sitting on a bench, and behind them there were two old dudes. my puppy is big and when he started howling, the little kids got scared. by the time i got him to stop, the kids were crying. then, when the kids went in the house, he was still staring at the two guys. why was he acting like this? he never barks
at anyone unless he gets startled . any help would be appriciated thx!
Answers:You have to socialize your puppy better around other people. I have Bloodhounds. They never howl at people and this is not "typical" hound behavior. Take him out and meet a LOT of different people in many different situations. You're going to have to get after him when he is barking uncontrollably.
If he is a big hound I would also suggest you get him into obedience classes ASAP. If he's big now, he'll be an even bigger adult and without training and manners you'll never be able to handle him.
Either he could sense that they were mean people, or he smelled some unfamiliar smell coming off of them that he didn't like one bit. That's kind of strange. >_>
Some dogs will bark or howl at strangers.
Your puppy may be telling the strangers "this is my human don't mess with them!"

I think all hound dogs bark and howl at people. he might have thought they were going to hurt you or the old guys were going to hurt the kids. or he might have just thought they were strangers.
This is typical hound behavior. It will become more prominent as he gets older. Hounds are hunters and they howl when they chase and locate their prey. They just howl.
He probably focused on them because they caught his attention and were probably staring and making eye contact.
Make sure he gets plenty of exercise and take him to training classes so you know the proper way to handle him.
