Why do Chihuahua have big ears2007-11-25 2:55:47

i find rather amusing that they are so tiny but have humungus ears why?

I guess so at least part of them is big..lol Why do some dogs like Basset Hounds have such long floppy ears? Each breed is different. Little things like the ears make them unique. Chihuahua owner, lover and breeder.

so they can hear better... seriously not sure but I have two of them & yes it is amusing to see their big ears stick up

they need to hear the big feet of their owners coming so they don't get squashed, in the wild it would be a defense and a hunting aid...

My guess is if they do come from Mexico (which studies dispute) They were bred to live in desert conditions, and given their size they would have to hunt small rodents or bugs, which in the desert burrow under the sand. Judging by the way my chihuahua acts they would be able to hear the movement under the sand and dig up the prey. The ears or more easily directed in a specific location to pin point hearing. The eyes are large I would guess for the ability to see small movement. But this is just a uneducated guess.

dunno but there head and eyes are promonant coz they can suffer from hydrocephalus(water on the brain) and thats why there head is so big! chiauhas (or however its spelt)are the only breed to suffer this condition ..i have it as well so im just like them tho i aint got big ears

They have big ears to better hear their pray scurrying about and to help keep them cool since they are from a warm climate.
