Why do German Shepherds have the slopey back legs
Why do German Shepherds have the slopey back legs2007-11-25 2:55:51
What was the reasoning behind breeding them to look like this?
Answers:They are bred for the beautiful "flying" trot that is so smooth that in theory you could set a full glass on the dogs back & it wouldn't spill...
Breeding for extremely smooth gate in horses tend to put a lotta angle on those hind legs too...
They were breed to heard and they needed them like that so it was easyer to swing down to the ground when cattle would try to kick them
It was to give it a longer gait. IMO the American GSD's look terrible now. They look like they walk on their hocks and will fall apart if you touch them too hard on their hindquarters. It is a shame what has been done to this beautiful breed.
If you have ever seen a proper / correct shepherd with proper angulation, moving across the field, you would easily be able to see that it helps them to very smoothly and swiftly cover alot of ground with very little effort at all..
