I have two little dogs and I think they try to compensate for their size through their bark (my big dog doesnt hardly bark at all). Try a squirt gun... it tends to quiet them down a little and gives them a quick deterant to barking as long as you squirt them when they are barking and not after they have already stopped.

I tend to not like the shock collars as they can leave marks on the dog and people look at that as an easy trainer, plus as soon as they realize battery is dead or the collar is off, they go right back at it again.

Dachshunds were bred to go underground and find/kill vermin (Bagders, rodents, etc.). When a dog is underground, just about the only way to tell where it is is by its bark.

So the dogs were bred to bark loud and often when excited to alert their handlers to where they were.

Unfortunately, it's a lot more annoying when they're above ground. ;)

I don't know that that's a true statement. I live in an apartment and never hear the dachshunds the lady in the apartment below me or the guy who lives next to her have. I can say though they are very protective of their owners and bark a lot if you try even to chat with them. And if I go to the mailbox (near her door) they will bark.but normally they are quiet.
