What could I do to help my doggie?

Dogs have very sharp, intense hearing so the sounds of the lightning and the thunder are significantly more than human hear. We learned to loudly turn on the TV or radio when there was a storm so cover some of the "noise" as well as sit with our dog, stroking and telling calmly it was okay. We did the same when some inconsiderate neighbor was using fireworks.

Not every dog reacts negatively to thunderstorms. You may need to ask your vet for medication if your dog's reaction is serious.

I think only certain breeds do that. My beagle is terrified of storms.

Mine don't, cause I taught them that there is nothing to fear, thunderstorms or anything else.. Teach your dog that you are in control and there is nothing to fear.. Do things with him to take his mind off the noise, play some tunes, turn the tv louder, play a fun game so that he forgets all about it..

not all dogs do mine doesnt but just keep him close to you and hang out with him

I have several dogs and one older psycho dog just freaks during thunderstorms. I just let her in-if she is outside-and keep her close so she feels safe. She is normally a very aggressive dog but when the thunder starts she wants her momma.

heres what I think, I may be wrong though. Dogs, when they were wild would dig underground to escape wind, storms e.t.c. Now that we have them domesticated, they live in the house with us, or outside in the yard. They get nervoues because they wory about us, their owners, and try to find cover. I had a dobe that was pretty tough, but when a thunderstorm hit, she jumped in my bed with me, and that was the only time she ever got in bed with me, or even on the couch e.t.c. And I gave up on getting her out of the bed during a storm, she wouldnt budge. Hope this makes sense! Thats the way I see it!

I have the same problem...my mix (chow, Shepard, and other) has been abused in the past and now is easily scared (especially of storms)...she was a shelter dog, a lot of shelter or rescue dogs have emotional baggage you need to research individual history to find out specifics, playing with my dog doesn't help her and when we try to pet her and comfort her she calms down for a minute then she freaks out again...but we jsut sit there and wait for her to come back so we can pet her and calm her down some more, if it gets really bad then we turn the tv up so she has something else to hear, we shut all the window shades and doors up...sometimes she feels better if we hide in a closet or under a bed or under a desk with her and some chew toys

Well your dogs ears can hear the tunder really well and it hurts there ears.

i have a mountain curr and shes hates thunderstorms it looks like shes about to hyperventalate. what i do so talk sweetly to her and sooth her, just spend time with her because if you leave her alone she get even more afraid. thats what i do. and make sure to pet her a lot to, that sooths her. good luck

Mine do that too they bark at the sky or run for shelter but I ask my vet for some advice and he said that the only way to help my dogs was to play a cd with thunderstorm sounds at different volumes and give them treats when they are calm or if you can make it a very happy event. you will slowly see improvement as you increase the sound and keep playing with your dog over a period of time he/she will get over their fear.

Some dogs have bad experiences with loud noises. Your dog might be scared because when it was a puppy it had bad experiences. If your dog keeps running around or hidding coaxe it out and make your dog sit and listen. You might have to give him a treat to be good. Then he will soon probably soon relize that there is nothing to be scared of.
