Why do dogs give you their paw

Why do dogs give you their paw2007-11-25 2:55:18Answers:

Because they know it looks cute, and quite likely to manipulate you into throwing a tasty morsel in their direction.

to shake your hand of course
Because they have learnt they will usually get something in return.
no idea, but you have to hand it to them!
For the same reasons we give them our paw duhh..
Giving the paw comes from when they were puppies. It is a universal sign that it is only play and not meant aggresively. this then extends into adulthood
they've been trying to get shoes for years !
ah suppose`ther`Practising`4`if there ever going`to meet`the`QUEENS`Butcher`
Because they know u will fall for their evil plan... mwaaa ha ha ha haaaaa!!

I have 3 dogs and they all do this... I didnt train them to, they just do it... I believe they think they are royalty and extend the paw for u to bow to them.

Beware, if you do take their paw they will view you as forever one of their loyal subjects...

That reminds me of a question in the first edition of Trivial Pursuit which was;

What is it that a man does standing up, a lady does sitting down and a dog does on three legs? The answer being, of course, shake hands. A lot of people got that one wrong!

It's a simple thing they normally get taught. The people think they're all cute and stuff, lol.
I told my Rottweiler that you had asked this question, she just opened one eye, closed it and went back to sleep. All my dogs do it, I always assumed it was a case of them copying me. When ever one of them sits near to me, I put out my hand and touch/stroke her; in the same way, when I sit near one of them, they touch me with their paw. It is also an excellent way of getting attention from humans as it has the "arrh" factor!
Same reason we give our hands to other - to shake - greet the other
It is a leftover behaviour from early puppyhood. When puppies are suckling they use their paws to knead their mother's body to increase the flow of milk.

When the mother is weaning them they lick and paw around her mouth to get her to re-regurgitate food for them.

So extending a paw is just a juvenile way of trying to get food from an adult, Dogs which are fairly submissive will extend a paw, usually to their owners. People usually find it easy to train dogs to give a paw on command because it is a natural movement.

A dog with a stronger, less submissive character can still be taught to do it but will be less inclined to extend a paw naturally.
