Animals have whiskers to allow them to feel their way through gaps in the dark.

For example, a dog (or cat) can work out if it can fit through a tight gap by pushing its head through a little way, and seeing how much the whiskers bend back.

Well I have a long haired full coated Lhasa Apso and I believe her whiskers are there to keep her long coat out of her mouth and the eyebrows are there to keep the long hair from her eye's.

a dogs whiskers are there to aid the dog in negotiating tight spaces without getting stuck the same as other mammals rats, cats, rabbits. etc
they are feelers, it tells them if their head could fit through holes their censor's
they can feel with their whiskers. it helps them in the dark. i know cats use their whiskers to see if they can fit into a gap, maybe its the same for dogs
