Why do dogs lick cloth2007-11-25 2:55:19

My chihuahua is always licking his blanket. Why? Are they doing it to itch the inside of their ears or is it to clean his tongue? It 's gross!

Answers:

Like babies suck their thumbs for comfort because it reminds them of their connection to their mom, dogs will lick fabric because it reminds them of their connection with their litter mates. Dogs will lick anything that's soft like that.

Everyday when I come home my dog licks my hands & jeans. He learns where I have been(by taste & smell). They have a higher sense of taste & smell than we do & they learn alot by taste & smell.

I have 2 cats that are inside/outside cats. The male cat goes out mainly at night & goes out of the yard, the female cat stays in the yard & close to home. When the male cat returns the next morning she smells his face & butt. I assume she knows where he has been & what he has been eating & doing. She knows if there is another cats scent on him or food, or a dog. Not sure why but sometimes she will smack him across the face with her paw after smelling him! Guess he was out being a bad kitty.

My yorkie likes to like her blanket too and drags it all over the place with her, I think its just that comfort and security they feel having something is there for them to lick. Although they also tend to lick us now and again. Nothing much to worry about.
