There are 3 reasons that dogs lick faces. The most common is that they are showing you that you are the boss. If you pay attention at the dog park you will notice that when 2 dogs meet that one of the actions a submissive dog will do is to lick the face of the dominant dog. The reason for this is because when dog are in the wild as puppies they will lick there parents face when they want food from them as a submissive way of asking for food. When you watch dogs feed in the wild as adults you will notice that the submissive dogs will approach the alpha male and lick his face until he allows them to eat. The last reason is for cleaning purposes.

Because they're always licking their privates, or eating something disgusting, and you're face tastes better. But really though, it's like a kiss, and they're very affectionate animals that want nothing more than to please their owner.

My dog never licks faces, and I love that. She is friendly and affectionate without sharing her slobber. But I have met dogs who lick faces, I think they are just showing affection.

As puppies, they lick their mom's mouth asking for food. This causes a reflex on the mom that makes her regurgitate up food for her pups (I know, it sounds gross, but that is how they start the weaning process). When they grow up, that instinct stays, and they are licking your face as a sign of submission, seeing you as their parent/provider, and asking for food.
