It's a primal instinct behavior. Rolling in stuff masks their natural scent and makes them less detectable to prey.

They tend to do this to mask their scent and to leave some scent. It is like a party and thrill for them.

It has definitely earned my dogs a few extra baths.

Their instinct tells them this will protect them from predators.

You can train them out of this to some extent. Just tell them it's YUCKY! and give them a bath... then praise them for smelling so good and looking so pretty.

when an animal decays (or anything that lets off a stench as it decays) the oils and vitamins/minerals seep out of the skin (the greesy stuff) and the animal that rolls in this sees this as an opportunity to get extra oils and minerals on their coat. it is a disgusting thought, but its no different from the oils in makeup or lotion. its just how one animal benefits from the death of another animal.

To mask its scent. It's like perfume to them. There's some people riding on the subway in NY that seem to do the same thing. Pleasant way to start your day. Works better for the dog.
