M y dog used to roll in others dog you know what but now hes just rolling around I'm thinking its to leave his sent but I'm not sure.
Answers:Could be scent marking, could be that his back itches and this is how he scratches it. You know - sort of the canine version of "if it feels good, do it!"
They pick up the scent to tell the pack about where they've been. It's harmless as long as they are not rolling in other dogs poop, then you want to bathe them - obviously.
HAHA..MY DOG USED TO DO THE SAME THING. HE WOULD GO OUTSIDE FOR A FEW MINUTES AND COME BACK COVERED IN DOG DOO DOO. I HAVE NO CLUE WHY THEY DO THAT..SORRY I CANT BE MUCH HELP

Dogs leave their scent by "peeing" but your dog is just playing or in some cases iching.

My dog rolls in fox pee when we go for walks... I am not sure the exact reason why he would do that but he does it every time. He also rolls around in the fresh cut grass, and on the lawn all the time I think he just likes it kinda cleans their fur.. in winter they all roll in the snow and I think its to clean themselves. My other dog rolls on the ground on the ball... she will steal it from the other dogs and put it down and roll on it and snort and make noise.. I think she just is trying to claim the ball as hers, either that or it feels good on her back. I think there are different reasons why dogs roll around on the ground... marking, fun, cleaning their fur, play etc just depends on the situation.
My dog is bad about that..she gets on the trail of something(we have a couple of fenced acres she plays in), rolls around in places that smells that prey, and takes off.
Not harmful, but she had to get several baths in Skunked shampoo, because she got into skunk scent TWICE in the last month.annoying.
