Yeah I know where your going with this. Dogs are crazy I know. I still cant quite figure it out. Its not all dogs so there is really no explanation for the behavior.

Drives me insane - I think it's fox poo that does it for them - they can't resist! There have been times when my dog has literally been covered in the stuff - it makes me feel sick!

Sometimes they like the smell. It could be that they want to play, there itching, or they may like it.

If you mean their feces, its a doggie thing. I think only dogs roll in their own feces, because it has a special scent, so other dogs know "this is my scent". Not all dogs do it though...

They mostley do this after you give them a bath. They do it because after you use that doggie soap on them, it makes them feel as if they lost their natural scent and rolling brings it back. If they lost their natural scent, there is no way they can mate.

It's something about the scent. And if its wet..like mud and they are outside thats just to cool off. My dog does something weird, he rolls around on the carpet after i bath him to get the house smell on him (god forbid him smelling too clean). Very annoying bc hes shed crazy and i have to vaccume everyday.

it is an instinctive thing like a lot of their behaviours going back to a hunting mentality. they are trying to disguise their scent so they can hunt sucessfully and not alert their prey that there is a dog nearby.

It's a holdover from their wild ancestry when they had to hunt for survival. It was easer to sneak up on prey if the wild dog masked his or her own scent by rolling on the rotting carcass of another animal or in a pile of manure from another animal. Gross, but effective.
