Why do domestic dogs roll in the faeces of other animals2007-11-25 2:55:50

I always believed it was a throwback from their wild dog heritage and was a way of disguising their scent for hunting, so why do they roll in fox mess when foxes are also predators and disguising themselves as another hunter would be meaningless?

Your thinking is correct but your thinking as a human. Dogs dont know it's Fox poop they just know its something to cover their sent.

Actually, dogs rolling in dung and other smelly things is a throwback from their wild heritage, but not really like you're thinking.hunting and roving wild dogs roll in all kinds of smells to bring back to the parties that stayed "home". It's a way to communicate about where they have been...i.e...how to get to the good grub

Sometimes dogs will roll in the grass or in something smelly right after getting a bath. Some dog shampoos have perfumes that may be pleasant to humans but smell awful to the animal. It is just an effort to mask the unpleasant and un-dog-like odor.

Wolves will often roll in decomposing carcasses or the feces of plant eating animals or herbivores. This would mask their own scent and enable them to sneak up on their prey without detection. It could even fool members of the other species into accepting it as one of their own. This ancient instinct may have carried over to domesticated dogs.

Another school for thought is that dogs may roll in smelly things to 'advertise' what they have found to other dogs.
