Additionally, because they can. Because we have irresponsible pet stores that pretty much encourage people to buy the cute little puppy or kitten on impulse because it's sooo cute. Because there's always people who bred their dog because their dog is nice or they want a puppy just like him or her or they think their kids should "experience the miracle of birth" or they didn't mean to but they never got her spayed and now they just need to get someone to take the puppies, good responsible home or no. Because there are still parents out there who would rather give in than tell their children they can't have a puppy for the 100th time, or they think it's a responsibility teaching tool and their kids aren't going to learn about responsibility unless they get rid of the dog when the kids don't take care of the dog. It's extremely sad, but until our society really starts seeing dogs as living creatures who deserve good homes with people who'll take care of them rather than commodities to be sold to anyone who will pay, it will keep happening.

Because, while they're puppies, the owners are too focused on ''oh, how cute'', instead of socializing and doing proper training. Therefore, when the puppy becomes an adult, those ''oh how cute'' antics, are no longer very cute. So, instead of correcting the behavior that they allowed throughout puppyhood, they feel that the dog is a lost cause, and get rid of it (usually ending up getting yet another puppy, down the line).
