Why do people crate their animals when if they trained them properly they would never have to2007-11-25 2:55:54

It's a decision that really needs to be based on a dog by dog basis in the end though. If you have a dog that is still exhibiting anxious behavior and is being treated for it, in the meantime you probably should crate the animal, because frankly, there are way too many dangers (medications, electrical cords...and so forth) in a home for a dog that is getting into everything.

Being a dog owner, I have to admit to having used the crate in the past, the dogs never seemed to enjoy it, although to be fair they never enjoy it when I leave. However, since I don't work outside the house anymore, they really love going in there for a snooze. It is their little den now.

Because people live in a fast Pace world anymore. They never have enough time to do what needs to be done so they get this little puppy and kids have school, parents work, puppy get shoved in a crate for 8 hours and people don't think anything of it. I have seen someone talk in here where they put their puppy in a crate when they have dinner. They didn't want to be bother with puppy while they were eating. A crate use to be a save haven for dogs. I feel they have become puppy jails. You don't have time to be bother with puppy , shove the poor little thing in a crate. It is like having a dog that you leave chain up out side all the time. What do they call them ..OUTSIDE DOGS.. I sit here and read about people yelling over people wanting to breed their dogs but yet they think it is ok to have a dog put in a crate for 8 hours while they are working. Sure puppies are going to get into trouble while you are gone that is what puppies do. No one needs to crate a dog for 8 hours at a time. You want a dog and need to work then find a puppy day care or have someone take care of your dog while you are working. I have 8 Shih Tzu's I have never used a crate for them. I do have a crate I used to get them use to a crate because vets and groomers uses them I didn't want them to be scared of one when they needed to be crated. The door is always open they go in and out as they want. If people need to go away or work or what ever all then need to do is put puppy in an open area with pee pads, a crate with the door left open and a gate across the door so puppy can't go into rooms you don't want to go into while you are gone. I train all my dogs with out a crate..and people have to stop using them as a jail for their puppy. No dog should be crated for 8 hours. I do agree with you and I don't sale my puppies to anyone that works and no one home during the day to keep a dog.

I agree, but from my research crate training is just that, training, it's not a solution, and it's not meant to be permanent.
