Why do people crate their animals when if they trained them properly they would never have to2007-11-25 2:55:54

To answer the question of what is the difference between crate training and subjecting dogs to the cruelty of puppy mill breeding: love, cruelty, etc. Puppy mills don't care about the welfare of their animals. They don't give their dogs crates for security and safety. They stick them into cages and breed them every time they come into heat. They don't worry about the quality of live for these animals, who aren't pets, but money making slaves. They don't receive good vet care, quality feed, or love. It's the difference of giving your child a room with a comfortable bed and locking him in a dark closet for his whole life. Torture, cruelty and inhumane treatment. Don't even think they are the same.

Of course, there is a difference between crate training and imprisioning a dog, or any animal. My girls have the run of the house most of the time. They are welcome to the couches, all but the highest bed (they ARE dachshunds, and shouldn't be up that high), and have a wicker bed with a pillow in it next to my computer. Crate training is not synomous with locking them up all day and night. If you have to do that, then you need to find them another home with someone who has the time and love to give to them. And who can PROPERLY CRATE TRAIN.

It's obvious that most people don't understand what crate training really is.

It's protection for the dog.

If you have to go out, you don't leave a puppy wandering around the house. Or if you have two females who don't get along, you crate one or both while you are out, to prevent a fight starting. A dog with separation anxiety will feel much better in his crate when you have to leave him. A puppy will be housetrained much faster if he is crate trained. And with multiple dogs in the house, no one would get any sleep if the young sprouts weren't crated at night.
