Why do people have such bad impressions about boxers2007-11-25 2:55:56

ive never heard of an agressive boxer. and some people put them in the smae catigorey and pittbulls! you hear about pittbull attacks all the time, but never boxers. so i dont know, its annoying though. they are restricted at alot of "dog friendly" apartments, hotels, and such. every boxer dog ive ever known has jsut been a big sweet goof.

There are probably a few reasons. Firstly, pit bulls are not a breed, but a TYPE of dog...and unfortunately many of boxers' physical characteristics are characteristic of pit bull type dogs (blunt nose, brindle, broad chest just to name a few). Secondly, most people who are afraid of pit bulls don't actually know what one looks like. This is one of the reason that bite statistics ranking "pit bulls" at the top of the bite list are unreliable.everyone is afraid of pit bulls because of the many sensationalized attacks so they assume the large scary dog that attacked them must have been a pit bull. In many cases they aren't even close, but the police report, bite incident report, and media reports all say the vicious dog was a "pit bull" because that's what the victim said.

Another reason "dog friendly" apartments don't allow boxers is because the general consensus among landlords is that large dogs are more destructive than small dogs. Many "dog friendly" rentals actually don't allow any dog over the weight of 30lbs...not exactly dog friendly in my opinion. In the landlords' defense, boxers can be very destructive. Especially as puppies and especially if they are left alone.

People act the same way towards my dog. He is half american bulldog and half english bulldog. He looks kind of scary but he is so well behaved and innocent. I have several friends with Boxers and they are terrific dogs. Its too bad people sterotype them:(
They look enough like pit bulls to the uneducated eye that they are often mistaken for them. Apparently that look is "mean," so they get barred from places. Most dogs are big sweet goofs, in my experience, but sometimes landlords & the like can't take a chance. It's sad, but true.
My experiences with boxers has been mixed. A friend of mine purchased a well-bred boxer puppy as a family pet and despite obedience training, this puppy ended up being very dominant and too aggressive for her young children. She was not inexperienced with dogs - a vet's wife that previously owned a well-trained rottweiler. She found a home for the puppy with a trainer that could handle such a challenging dog. Her friend bought a male puppy from the same litter that was great with her kids. Two puppies form the same litter - two different results.
