Why does dog food

Why does dog food2007-11-25 2:55:31

why does dog food have colourants in it when dogs are meant to be colour blind? i bought some supa dog the other day and there is bright green biccis in there!!!

Answers:

because it makes it more attractive to the owner - honestly! most of the appearance of pet foods are to appeal to the owner, why do they make dog biscuits cartoon bones shaped? you think the dog cares? there is huge amounts of reseach that goes into what will appeal to people but still make dogs eat it! it is, after all, it's the people who buy it so they have to like it too!

additives to stop it stinking and going mouldy
Probably to stop less reputable take-aways using it
I suspect the colouring is for the benefit of the owner, so that he /she thinks the dog is having scrumptious food!
ha ha ha , good point , probably to make it look different to the owners so they will buy it again::!!
Dogs to everyone popular belief are colour blind, but this is totally false, they can see colour but not the way humans can.
Dogs are not colorblind, they just see differently to us and see muted colors.

Remember marketing: selling the idea to the owner means it's sold. If the owner thinks it's got everything in it that their pet needs and "oh look, the green must mean something lets buy it"

The marketing for dog food is targeted toward owners, not animals. A guy from Purina (I think) was on TV once, and said that the flavors, colors, and packaging is all for the benefit of the owners (not that the packaging was a surprise). According to him, if they marketed to the animals, owners would be too disgusted to buy it (do you really want "Stinky Roadkill" flavored food in your house?). Dogs and cats aren't very discriminating. Also, although dogs are color blind, they do see color. They just don't see all color (I'm not sure which is missing, but there are only 3 choices).
dogs arent' color blind, it's a myth.
I think they do it to make it more appetising for kids! How many people out there have found their toddler enjoying a dog treat or two?
I think it makes it more appealing to the consumer,s eye versus buying a plain looking treat. Also colored treats are more expensive. Like buying a fishing lure. The color has to attract the buyer or it won,t sell. Some of my best lures are ones I like and have sanded all the color off of them.
So that I can purchase as per my best colour.
