Why does dog owner sells their retired show dog
Why can't they keep them as pets too??
What happens to them?
Answers:I keep all of my dogs. They are my best friends. However, when I began breeding this breed, I began with 'retired' show dogs.
some people are just in the dog show sport, for the love of sport, so they don't keep their dogs after they have earned their titles. Myself, my dogs are my family..It is expensive to keep old dogs, so that is why those in it for the sport don't keep them.
I couldn't believe a dog I found on petfinder last summer! She was regional champion in herding! 3 years old, Perfectly trained, and super, super smart. However, as the trainer had accomplished making her a champion, he put her up for adoption, to make room for his next project..
I have been in this dog world for more years than I care to count. I have never heard of a person killing his retired show dog.
I do know of an unscrupulous breeder (very highly esteemed in the show world, and president of his local kennel club,) who sends his whole 'crop' of yearlings to the Humane Society if they are not winning.usually about a dozen at a time..How very sad..
because it will have a good pedigree and if it breeds then there will be more pedigre ogs. it also makes good money.
sometimes they get put to sleep. once they are not of any use to the owner, they dont want to bother with them anymore. it is sad , isnt it?
breeders main objective is to promote the breed and to keep the breed healthy.. once a dog has finished showing and whelped 1 or 2 litters.. the breeder likes to find a forever home ( breeders cannot keep all the dogs that would be way too many) a reputable breeder wants the best for their dogs and a family home would provide the dog with companionship, etc. a retired show dog is housebroken, well socialized and healthy.. a good dog to get. far better to find them homes then to let them live out there years in a kennel.. wouldnt ya say...
I do on occassion sell an older, retired show dog. If they can go to live with a family where they are the one and only pampered pet rather than one of the group here at my house, then why would I deny them that new home? I try to do the best by my dogs for their entire life and sometimes that means allowing them to have a family all to themselves and not having to share with the other dogs.
People who own dogs just for the sole purpose of showing it has no purpose for the dog after they retire. Unless they decide to breed the dog or are really fond of the dog to a point they want it around with 4 or 5 other show dogs, they will usually sell their retired dogs. Everyone has their own views about this. Just for the record all my dogs are pets and stay in the family
Because they feel that they dog deserves a good retirement in a home where they will get more attention. Most people that have a retired show dog that they will sell show multiple dogs, and are gone a lot. They feel that they dog deserved more attention then they are able to provide, so they just want what is best for the dog. They will be very selective with where the dog goes, and they often try to find a child that wants to show in juniors (handling for kids) so that the dog still gets to go to shows (most dogs love going). I would never sell one of my retired dogs.
