Why does he eat his poop
Okay, I got this beautiful little Chi-Chon (2 parts Bichon, 1 part Chihuahua) and he's been potty training pretty well.
Although he's consistently eating his poop, okay I won't say consistently, but it does happen a lot. Why does he do that? And how on earth can I stop it? I've tried to distract him and what not, but nothing works. He just goes back for the poop.
Any help?
Answers:there is an enzyme at any pet supply that you sprinkle over his food..It is tasteless going in, but bitter after it has been 'processed'.. It is called 'Forbid'...Pineapple chunks will do the same, but I wouldn't recommend them for a toy breed, as they have too much sugar and may cause hypoglycemia.
He does this as something that was taught to him by mom when she kept the nest clean..I think it is a 'comfort food' ..
The only other good solution, as you aren't having luck with keeping it picked up before he can get to it, is to keep him on a leash when you can't watch him..
VERY common in small breeds. Can't say for sure why; possibly something lacking in the diet or there is still some nutritional value left so they run it through one more time. Perhaps they eat it to help keep the area clean.
There are products you can buy (For-Bid; Dis-Taste) that are designed to sprinkle on the food; after a couple days the poop apparently begins to taste nasty and they leave it alone.
