Why does my Golden Retriever hate water2007-11-25 2:56:41

She has ever since she was a puppy. She's five now. It's so weird 'cause I thought they loved water. It's almost impossible to give her a bath. If she even sees the water hose on, she will run. Is there a way to get her to like water?

Answers:

Just because you have a water dog, doesn't mean the dog likes water. Some dogs just don't like the water, while others you can't keep them away from it. Is the only time your dog is subjected to water is at bath time? Then the dog will accosiate water with that time. Is there a lake/pond/river close by you? If so then take the dog for a walk there. Walk in the water with the dog, but no splashing. Let the dog learn that water can be a good thing at times.

At her age probably not. IT is rare that a Golden doesn't like to be in water but it does happen. Just because they are supposed to be water dogs doesnt mean all Golden's love to swim or even take a bath. Yours doesn't.

MIne love the wayer but then I had them swimming since they were pups. Maybe thats why yours doesnt like the water she wasn't exposed to it early enough.

you probably need to ease her into it. Try to introduce her to water little by little so that she realizes it won't harm her.

My golden retriever attacks the water spray from the hose as if its alive =O

My dog's a mut, but part golden retriever, and he hates water. we haven't really worried about it too much, hasn't been too much of a problem for us.

thats weird most dogs love water. it sounds like someone harrassed her with it but obviously it wasnt you. i dont know. i guess some just have a different personality.

many dogs hate a bath but will love getting into a pond or a pool. I think it is loosing there body odor that they feel defenseless. That once they learned to hate something it is hard for them to relearn and love it. How does your dog react in the rain or snow? To undue a fear I think you are going to have to go slowly in reentering that condition to the dog - Perhaps allowing the dog to run around on wet grass. Wet your lawn - throw a biscuit or some other treat. Maybe ten find some lawn area that has an indentation and expose the dog to that area with the same treat.
