Why does my Miniature Schnauzer eat Cow Poo2007-11-25 2:56:41

When in a field covered in very attractive bits of cow excretion, the hound will do anything to get to a nice bit and gobble away. And don't try to pull him away, he'll grab it in his mouth or yank you round to find another. What's so attractive about this meal?

It is called Coprophagia more than likely he eats the cow poop because your cows are vegetarians. They have already broken down the nutrients in the grass and digested what they needed. Whats left over in the poop will be easier for your dog to digest and absorb then eating the grass himself. I wouldn't worry about it if your cows are healthy. But using "leave it" and having the dog on leash for training sessions arround the poop is the best remedy. Also try spraying tobasco sauce on a few piles that you allow the dog near. He will change his mind when he smells it.

I dunno but my dogs like to rub themselves up and down in fox poo and it bloody stinks!!!

Dogs just love eating poo - it's normal -not all of them do it though. The best course of action would be to tel him to LEAVE IT when he goes near it. Keep him on the lead, when he goes near it pull him away and say NO or LEAVE IT. My cocker spaniel eats his own poo - nasty! Keep his little beard cut short - bits of poo could get left in his beard!

There are probably a lot of nutrients in it that your hound finds attractive or else he just finds the taste irresistible.
