Why does my Pekinese growl so much
I just inherited a 7 year old cutie-patootie Pekinese dog. I love him so much. But every time my face gets too close to his, or if I get a little too lovie-dovie snuggly with him, he will growl. I immediately stop because I鈥檓 fearful I just might get bitten.
I鈥檝e never had a Pekinese before. What would cause him to growl like that? Or, is that his way of saying 鈥淚 love you too鈥?
Answers:I knew a doggie like that too...it would whine to get on the couch with you, but when you picked it up to put it on the couch, it would growl; it would sit in your lap and look up at you with adoring eyes, begging to be petted, but when you petted it, it would growl; it would scoot its bottom along the ground, but when you used your tongue to try and clear out the anal glands, it would growl. It was a master of mixed signals! There was no pleasing it. But the important thing to note is that I was never once bitten. So use the same philosophy that I use on all my dates, and just keep pouring on that physical affection, even if they tell you stop. Sometimes a growl means "yes."
That means he wants you out of his space. Some male dogs can be very territorial. You are keeping yourself from getting bit by moving. The growling is a warning. He also may not be used to the extra attention he is getting and finds it annoying.
beware the dogs space my neighbor has one raised from a puppy its now 7 years old and he was doing the same thing and the dog bit the tip of his nose off and two weeks later got him by the eye.
If your nose was smashed in like there's you would growl too. No really it is telling you to back off!
I think because you inherited the Pek, you don't really know its background or its past. However, your dog should not be growling at you when you snuggle it. I think the growling is a defensive mechanism for the dog. You should train your dog that every time you get close to it, and if he growls raise your voice and say "No." Then you should praise it and hold the dog. After a while, the Pek should be more comfortable with you.
Some dogs make a low grunting noise that may sound like a growl and actually just be them talking and being affectionate. Although you also may be hearing a growl from a dog that does not want your face that close to his. It is very hard to tell without seeing this. I would try some liver. Dogs love liver! Cook it in some water and cut it into tiny pieces and give him treats while your being affectionate ad see what he thinks of that. Remember tiny he should have a small mouth and be undershot.
Male pekingese are very aggressive (my aunt has five), It's in their nature not to mention I don't know my pekingese that likes to have someone near their face unless they re licking you. Best thing to do is let him tell you what he likes by growling or not. I also have a pekingese fiest mix who growls when he thinks he's talking to you...but if his tails not wagging then he's pissed... I hope it helps and best of wishes
