I think it is a behaviour that stems from a puppy. If he was under nurished the mum would encourage him to eat his own poop as it contains many vitamin. For what ever reason, they can contiune to do this and need to be trained to stop. This can include other dogs poop, which also contains hormones etc which will be of interest to your dog. Its not harmful, just undesirable.

my dog does the same as well as indulging in some kitty candy.Its gross. I've read that if your dog is still a puppy they may see the poop as having nutritional value since the digestion isn't always complete in young dogs.Also some dogs are attracted to the undigested rice or corn in the poop of other dogs.Also if your training your dog to poop in a certain place and it poops somewhere its not supposed to he may eat the poop to get rid of it to avoid punishement.

Dogs are discusting like that! My dog likes guinea pig poos, never dog poo. I am glad because piggy poos are just vegetable - they don't smell at all!

The reason that I have found for my golden retrievers is that they don't have enough protein in their diets or they're lacking some other minerals. We now give them these special enzymes in their food that is supposed to help, plus we give them half dry dog food and half meat (such as hamburger, steak, pork, etc.) in order to get they're protein up. We also get bones from the butcher that still have some meat on them and let them chew those too. So far, they haven't eaten poop since.

Dogs are opportunist scavengers and will eat anything that they consider edible - this includes all types of faeces including their own.
