They turn in circles before they lay down too. It's an instinct to knock down the tall grass in a natural environment.

I won't answer then because I no longer have a dog either...they don't live forever you know.

But I know why they do it.

They need to walk to stimulate their digestive tract. That is why whenever you see someone out walking their dog, the dogs are always stopping to take a dump, and people are supposed to carry poop bags to clean up after them. ( Not that most people do! )
