Why does my dog keep doing this
Like other dogs my border collie like to stop and sniff around when I take her for a walk. But, unlike other dogs for some reason whenever she stops to sniff around, she lays down on the ground to sniff it everytime. Is this a border collie thing?
Answers:I don't have a border collie,but I do know dogs, and I would think that may be a characteristic of a herding breed.The dogs (herding breeds) seem as tho they size up what is going on in that position.That is great you take it for walks, alot of folks do not realize what an active breed border collies are.
MAYBE SHE WANTS A CLOSER SMELL IF MINE FINDS ONE SHE LIKES SHE THROWS HER SELF ON THE GROUND AND STARTS ROLLING IN MID WALK ..

well just let her sniff there is 2 reasons for her sniffing
1. the urine from other dogs sometimes marks their territory so mabye she doesn't want to go into another dogs territory
2. when a dog urinates it is leavin messages for other dogs so if there are a lot of differant messages she might need some time to check it
Her neck might not be comfortable with her head downwards. To get dogs to lie down if they're on a leash, you pull the leash down towards the ground, forcing their head down. After a minute or two, the dog gets uncomfortable and to relieve that, they lie down. Your dog just may have a lower tolerance for that level of discomfort, so she lies down to sniff things.
She may want to rest and sniff things at the same time. Just a guess. Her nose may not be so sharp if she's older, and might just want a closer sniff. It doesn't sound like a problem, just diversity.
Sounds like she would be a great Search & Rescue Dog. If you have the time to train her, you might think about looking into it. Some places do give classes for just that and teams (you & your dog) are needed everywhere. Good luck, you have a very smart dog on your hands;^)
The only thing I can think of is that she wants to stay in the area or its a form of scent marking on herself.
She is probably getting some of the scent on her. That way the sheep will smell other sheep and not dog and be scared.
Dogs are weird. Some dogs like to sniff and somedogs like to roll around in whatever they have smelt.
