Why does my dog lick the slip cover on my chair
I have a 10-yr old Chihuahua. Whenever he lays down on my lounger next to me, he starts licking the cotton slipcover on my chair. He has a continuous flow water bowl, so he has water to drink. Why does he do this? Is it something I should worry about? A symptom of something serious?
Answers:Hi, I know cats are different from dogs but I have a cat that does the same thing to 2 different things, one being a very specific felt-like chair. I have always thought that it is the texture of the object which she likes, so perhaps that is the case with the cotton slip cover and your dog. (My cat has plenty of water available, too, so it's not that she's thirsty.)
There is a scent in the chair that he likes...probably an old stain that you can't even see...
There are SOO many reasons for this, I have seen people come in with dogs who do it out of nervous habit, they were in need of dental cleaning, they had underlying health problems, or simply they enjoyed the feeling of what they were licking.
If this is something that has started recently- at his age- it may be a good idea just to have him checked out.
it could be nothing like I said- but you know your dog better than we do- you've had him for 10 years, and if you're concerned enough to ask... this is obviously unusual for him.
sometimes a need for dental care is why dogs lick anything they get their tongues on. sometimes if they're nervous or not feeling well its a comfort thing.
So its good just to get him checked out. Even if its just for your peace of mind.
but first, try washing the slipcover and see if that helps.

could be that he smells sweat on the chair and is licking it off. my dog does that to my pillow and its very annoying.
u know hes probably just licking something that u droped or something like that i wouldnt be 2 concerned ive seen a dog do that !!!
