Why does my dog poop on the sidewalk not the grass2007-11-25 2:56:10

I just rescued a 1+ yr old dog that insists on going on the sidewalk? The grass is right there! I then have to pick it up leaving nice skid marks. ick! She is potty trained and knows to wait to be outside. Is this a product of abuse from her past home? Was she held in a concrete area? How do I get her to change this routine?

It's probably a combination of a couple of things, but since you just rescued her, she is currently doing what she was trained to do, for whatever reason. At that age, she just knows that that is the thing she is supposed to do. Dogs love to roll around in the grass on their backs. It's such a fun thing to watch, always makes me smile, because they are in pure heaven. Maybe she just doesn't want to roll around in her own poop. The fact that you mentioned you have to pick it up when it's on the sidewalk leads me to believe you might not be picking it up off the grass quite as instantaneously.

Change the routine with love and patience. Putting her on the leash to "go" only on grassy areas for a while is a good idea, as mentioned by an earlier answerer.

Don't scold her too arshly, but let her know she did something wrong, and if she goes in the grass, give her lots of praise! It's like potty training a puppy!

Most rescue dogs have their kennels on a concrete surface for easy clean-up/hosing down. It's simply a comfort thing. My dog does it too.
