Why does my maltese do this2007-11-25 2:56:41

He fills up his mouth at his food bowl, then he runs twenty feet away to where the carpet is and then he starts chewing there. Or sometimes he'll take the pellets in his mouth up the first stair (which is also carpeted) that's right next to the room where his food is.

Does he really like the feeling of carpet under his paws that much, or is it something else?

That's really interesting! Kind of like my cat. She will scoop her food with her curled paw and eat it out of her paw, or she will scoop a huge amount onto the ground from her bowl and eat it there. Silly animals.

I honestly don't have any idea here. I'm sure he has a reason. haha

A lot of Toy Breeds do this, it's very common. My Papillon would run off with her food too. They are little they do what they do and that's why we love them;^)

I'm thinking he could have a fear that the food he has in his mouth could be taken away from him. Dogs in groups will sometimes take things away from others. They'll take a piece of meat or a toy right out of the side of another dog's mouth. He might even be afraid you will take the food away. It could be instinctive for him. Or he could have learned the behavior as a defense. Was he raised in a kennel or around other dogs before you got him?.

my dog does it but we realized that (by watching her) the reason she was moving her food was because her food bowl faces a wall in a room no one goes in whereas our living room (both the rooms have hard wood floors so thats not it, for us, your dog might be different) our living room is a room that everyone is in and theres alot more interesting stuff to see while eatting besides a white wall
