Why does my shih tzu keep licking his paws2007-11-25 2:56:44

my vet told me it was probably because the hair on his paws is aggravating me, so i brought him to the groomers. but, everytime he comes back from the groomers, he is still licking. he only does it at night and will do it for about 5 or 10 minutes!!?! any ideas why??

My dog had the same problem and after visiting 3 vets the problem was solved.the first 2 vets said it was allergys, WRONG! Its a yeast infection. Does the dog have black between her pads/toes?Are her feet red? Is she itching her ears? Are the inside of the ears dirty? It all points to a yeast infection. Ask your vet.

For some dogs it's just a grooming ritual. If the hair has been trimmed and is clean then his it's probably not bothering him but just part of his personality, he feels he needs to spend the extra time or perhaps he finds it relaxing before retiring to bed for the night.

My Shih-Tzu does the same thing. My vet says it's normal for dogs to clean themselves, and some breeds are just more "obsessive" about it than others. Also sometimes they smell something weird on their paw: shampoo from the groomers, the grass they stepped on out in the yard, food they spilled, etc, and investigate by licking and tasting.

Could possibly be the start of a mild case of allergies. My dog does that licks his feet, bites at them rubs his face with his paws scratches his belly. It all depends on how bad of a case it is but it could be something to look into and ask the vet about.
