Why does my westie eat her back2007-11-25 2:56:44

i have a little westie she is 7 mths old i got her nuethered last month but in the last 4 week's she has eaten into her back ,the vet

said it was her diet but i have changed it and she is still doing it . i was wondering if it was the flea drops i used on her in the last month . and also the vet said her ear's should be pink and her belly but they are black the vet also said this was due to diet but no change yet on that any one got any idea's please let me know.

You will have to keep changing her diet until you find something that she isn't allergic to. The diet the vet recommends is probably Science Diet, and my allergic pet is more allergic to that than other things I've found. Vets often get their only nutritional training from the Science Diet people so that's why they push those foods so much. Real food is better.

Look for a food that has an unusual protein source like venison or lamb, then make sure it has NO GRAIN at all in it- no corn, no wheat, etc. You might be able to get by with rice, but some dogs can't tolerate that, either.

Your best bet is to feed real, natural food, not commercial packaged dog food. Right now a lot of dog foods are being recalled due to contamination, so it's a good time to learn about healthy feeding.

This is info about the BARF diet (BARF stands for Bones And Raw Foods). I have seen animals get healthier and even recover from serious illnesses after their diets were improved by switching to real food.

Honestly, that doesn't make any sense what your vet is saying. I would personally go to Banfield. That is where I take my dogs and they are wonderful! My dogs have always been healthy! I don't really know but maybe it's the food! I personally like Iams.
