Why does my yorkie sometimes not chew his food and swallows it whole2007-11-25 2:56:45

I found out because when he does not chew it before swallowing it he throws it all up later. This is new as of the last month or so. I am thinking about taking him to the vet but thought maybe some people may have had this problem before.

I have a Yorkie and he does this too! I think it's because he gets so excited that he forgets to chew.which is weird since he eats the same food all of the time! =) I've not been able to find anything to make him stop doing it; I've also asked my vet and he said there's nothing to worry about. For my pup, his kibble is small enough that he can't choke on it and it doesn't hurt his system going down. (If he doesn't throw it up that is!) The only solution my vet offered was to buy him bigger kibble, that way he HAS to chew it. The only downside was that it makes it a little tough for him to eat it so he said it was my choice. I've just kept mine at regular size and he's fine! Good luck!!

He could be just eating as fast as a can and making his stomach upset...then he pukes. Do you feed him during certain times of the day? How long does he go without food? The problem might be solved by free feeding him. Which means there is a bowl of kibble out there for him to eat whenever he wants to. At first he might scarf the entire bowl.. but over time he will realize the food is always there until he is hungry. Dogs can monitor their own food intake and you'll be more likely to have a dog at a healthy weight.
