Why dose my dog do this2007-11-25 2:56:16

Im not shure if this is what happens, but it seems to me she stops breathing through her mouth and starts breathing through her nose. She makes these sounds that kinda sounds like a gagging sound, that last less than a minute. I thought it may be allergies, any thoughts?

my moms dogs did this and the vet told her it wad an allergies problem also known as reverse breathing and prescribed a pill they took it for a month and the allergies went away. they said it isn't life threatening but it is hard on a dog

It's an inverted snort. It just happens sometimes. The best remedy is to pet and calm you dog. It'll stop. It isn't a problem.

Dogs pant to coll themselves if they pant a lot they will stop and its like a sigh and then they go back to panting you will see a lot more of it when it gets warmer. Its normal

Is it an outside dog? If it is, it might be allergic from the pollen and stuff.

I really wouldn't take to heart that it is a "reverse sneeze" from the info you have given it does leave other things as options too. The reverse sneeze is usually more common in small dogs, hound dogs and I don't think I have had many beagles that don't do it. But I would call the vet you want him to check.
