I think its more the anxiety route. They say it could be just to get attention but mine didn't start eating rocks till I got her to quite eating her upper arms. She would tear huge sores by biting herself. Pull large cumps of hair out once they were healed. Another reason she didn't get adopted out and I kept her.

He's a dog and they sometimes eat the stupidest things, just stop him before hand and teach him the leave it command, it's not good for him and will result in a huge vet bill. So train him to eat only food you put in front of him. Good luck

Seriously - Don't let your dog eat stones...You're going to end up with a HUGE vet bill if they ever cause a blockage.

don't know but my dog does the same, coal and stones, you need to be careful, could be very dangerous if they swallow, mine just chews them but doesn't actually swallow, i think it's coz she's teething, she's only a pup.
