dogs sometimes run away they like to explore thier scence of smell is so keen that the slightest thing is intresting to them and they have to go check it out the further they get the newer the smells take it for a walk on a leash and train him to stay in the yard spend some time with him and if that doesnt work either get a fence or one of those invisible electric fences hell learn

There are different reasons why a dog is running away 1 is if it is a male he might smell a female in heat if you get him nudered that could take care of that. 2 depending on the type of dog he might be curious about his suroundings or smell other animals and wants to patrol what he thinks is his teritory. You need to make sure he realizes your yard is his teritory. If you have a dog on a chain instead of a fenced yard that could be part of the problem because he sees no boundrys.

Is it instinctual? My dog is filled with the herding desire so a passing biker triggers the need to chase.

Is the dug a hunting bread -- following a smell?

Are you taking your dog out to explore (not just walk) often enough? Mine is always anxious to go out in the woods

Do you have an invisible fence? Once we put one in, the dog stopped trying to run down the street to the creek.
