Why is dog euthanasia worse than killing farm animals2007-11-25 2:56:19

In a recent post, people were outraged at the thought of euthanizing a healthy dog. Why is that considered the most cruel thing on earth by some readers? The dog will most likely be euthanized using the same method later in its life when it has become terminally ill. Meanwhile, animals like pigs (who are supposedly more intelligent than dogs) spend their lives in tiny pens and are slaughtered brutally and apparently yelp like humans when they die. Is it hypocritical of society to decide dogs should never be put down prematurely while pigs should lead lives of misery? Is it because dogs are cuter, smaller and easier to train? Is it because people have an attachment to that pet but don't mind as much when strange pigs are killed?

Answers:

I find the conditions in which many farm animals live absolutely disgusting.

Pigs are one of the saddest stories, the way they are penned up in tiny pens, with not enough room to move.

When I was a child, pigs used to run around free on the farm yard, and as soon as somebody turned up with their feed they'd come running, like a bunch of dogs.

I love all farm animals as well, and it is terrible to see how some of them suffer.

Dogs are domesticated animals meant to be human companions. Hogs are considered live stock and are raised for the express purpose of entering the food chain to feed humans. I don't see why you cannot see the difference unless you are a vegetarian, then I guess I can understand why you would ask such an question.

I don't believe it's acceptable for any animal to be killed for any reason but some people don't think of farm animals as animals at all but rather food. Until the world changes their morals and ethics as a whole in society This ignorant acceptance will continue. If people would simply spay and neuter their pets and only responsible breeders would breed then we would not have any problems. There are too many people trying to make a quick penny by breeding and too many people that want a dog as a yard ornament instead of a companion.

I think you have a very valid point. I think the reason is something that goes very deep into our ancestral makeup. People and dogs have been domesticating each other for thousands of years. Is there really any difference, not really. Does it feel like there is a difference, to a very large majority of humans.
