Why is my 8 month old shih-tzu hanging his tongue out of his mouth and breathing heavy2007-11-25 2:56:22

For the past few days, he's been hanging his toungue outside his mouth more often - is this because he's hot OR due to something else? The house temprature is about 75 degrees, but its not humid. He didn't used to hang his tongue out before so we're a little worried. Any ideas??

Unless he's yelping or looks very stressed, he's just panting. My dog has been panting more heavily, too--he's just hot. Dogs also do not sweat, and they regulate their body temperature by panting. He's just trying to get comfy.

i have a 2 year old shih tzu and he ALWAYS does that .. so i wouldnt be too worried!! but if youre still concerned, call your vet and im sure they will know if its something that should be checked out!

Don't worry, this is just how dogs cool themselves down. They don't sweat much. Only through their paws. Your dog should have access to water at all times.

HE'S PANTING! it's how they let the hot air out.. JEEZ.. it doesn't take a brain surgeon to know that.. you shouldn't have a dog if you don't know what panting is

If you're worried, why not take him to the vet? It's probably time for a checkup anyway.
