Why is my dog losing weight2007-11-25 2:56:25

My sixteen month newfoundland has lost 10 pounds in 10 weeks. Stool sample says no worms. Blood work scheduled. Any ideas as to what it could be?

my dog lost quite a bit of weight too but in a wk & 1/2. blood tests came back normal. w/the vet we talked over possibilities such as any changes that might have happened (walking sched., moving, etc.), trauma of any sort?

fortunately enough, it all came down to my having a picky little eater! :-) my vet informed us that there are dogs that get tired of eating the same thing & are picky eaters. now we change his diet every 2wks. & he's eating pretty healthy. he's also regained his lost lbs. & is back @ a healthy weight.

good luck w/your doggy. maybe you can ask a few vets opinions on your doggy's weight situation if this vet here doesn't know what's going on w/your dog.

Some animals loose weight in the spring and gain in the fall. But that is 1pound a week so that can't be good.

that is definitely weird. I would have said worms right off the bat. Well Cancer is the only thing I can think of but rarely at 10 weeks. Might just be that she is growing taller and getting thinner.

well usually when it gets warmer outside dogs and cats tend to lose weight. it could also be that they r losing their coat. that is what happens to my dog. he loses about 5-10 pounds in the summer and in the winter he puts the weight back on

Is your dog eating at all,and has he been playing alot because he might be losing weight from all the things I said.

Give him more food. Puppies need alot of food, especially if theyre active

T-Cell count will be a big help here. Could be an infection. Did you get a urinalysis? Pull any ticks off it in the last few weeks?

Has the dog been laying around all winter and has now become a lot more active? Large dogs, like a newfee, can put on fat fast and take it off fast! If the blood work comes up negative I wouldn't worry to much about it, but if he looses another five pounds or so, I would board him at the vets for a few days for observation.
