Why is my dog scared of a cardboard box2007-11-25 2:56:25

We got a cardboard box from getting takeout from a restaurant. We took all the food out of it and it not hot or cold or anything but my dog is terrified of it.

Ever since we got him, he has had a 'crate' which is basically a big cardboard box with a blanket it in and he loves it. But he is just plain terrified of the box (which is a lot smaller) from the restaurant.

...does it have a bad smell or something? (The food wasn't spicy or sour or anything.)

Isn't it funny what dogs can be afraid of? One of my newfies is terrified of my hardwood floors. I've only had her about 2 months and she is slowly coming around. She'll walk through the house,(all hard floors), with someone holding her leash and that's it. but the first couple of weeks she wouldn't leave the throw rug unless I had her leash, and then she jumped right back on it. It's jst something new. Leave it out and let him explore it in his on way and in his own time. Good luck.

Dogs may display a variety of behaviors when they're afraid. A fearful dog will display certain body postures, including lowering his head, flattening his ears back against his head, and tucking his tail between his legs. He may also pant, salivate, tremble and/or pace. A frightened dog may try to escape, may show submissive behaviors (avoidance of eye contact, submissive urinating, rolling over to expose his belly), or he may freeze and remain immobile. Some dogs will bark and/or growl at the object that is causing their fear.
