Why is my dog trying to tip her food dish over2007-11-25 2:56:27

They want protect the food and move the food as part of their territorial instincts.

Is she gulping her food fast and just knocking over the dish by accident? If not, she's probably just playing. Consider getting her a "puzzle ball"; a toy that you put kibble in and the dog rolls the ball around to get it out. This shouldn't be the only way she gets to eat, of course, but it will occupy her attention and burn off some energy.
She is trying to bury her cache.

Think of a wolf in the wild trying to cover up a catch. They use their noses to push dirt, leaves, branches over their kill to hide it from other predators.

She may be telling you she wants food put in the bowl.

The bowl may be the wrong size for her or have sharp angles that allow the food to slip away from her grasp and she flips the bowl to get the food out on the floor where she can more easily pick it up. Some dogs grab mouthfuls of food and drop it on the floor so that they can take bits at a time.

Try a different sized bowl.

She's playing. I have a four year old female newfoundland that "digs" in her water bowl. It doesn't matter if its empty, (which it rarely is), or full. I started only filling it only 1/3, full as it hold a gallon, and refilling it as needed, but that didn't work either. Now I place a bathroom rug under it to catch spilled water. Dogs like to play in different ways.
