Why is my dog urinating on herself when she sleeps2007-11-25 2:56:27

She has been house broken for over 4 years and one night she urinates at the back door. I didn't let her out earlier and I don't know how long she try to hold it(we were in the bed). Every since then she has been urinating while she sleeps. I took her to the vet all blood and urine test came back negative. They really don't know either.

Your vet didn't discuss with you the hormonal imbalance that is causing the incontinence? Spayed female dogs sometimes develop this, it's easily treated with a drug called PROIN, ask your vet. And take your dog to a more knowledgable veterinarian, this one is an easy diagnose. It's not a disease of the urine, her sphincter muscles are simply not working properly.

My 14 yr old dog has been doing this for a couple of years now. It's sad, but it's the same as if your gramma needs depends. I came up with a solution to keep the pee at bay. I found that a laundry basket with an old blanket or towel works great. When it gets wet, i just change it out, and bleach the dirty one. Its alot of work, but its better than buying and changing diapers.

If she is spayed, she now lacks the hormone estrogen. The ability to control urinary function is tied to that hormone... I'm surprised your vet didn't tell you. You then obviously have two choices --- thick padding, a diaper or hormone replacement therapy. My female dobie has the same problem, but it happens so rarely... I'll get up to let her out, and her blanket has urine in it---- voided while she slept.
